The LINEAR and M.uno FAST REVERSE is an innovative mount designed for astronomical imaging and manufactured in Italy by the
DAL SASSO Srl, a company with more than 30 years of experience in the field of high precision mechanics.
Marketed with the AVALON INSTRUMENTS trademark, this mount ranks in the medium-size mount range with a weight capacity around 20-25 kgs, imaging and observing, respectively.
The LINEAR and M.uno FAST REVERSE project rises from the passion for astronomy and mechanics taking advantage of more than 15 years of experience and testing, lots of star parties and spending countless hours under starry skies, with any types of instrumentation. Since the great majority of the problems regards the mount, both design and manufacture have been focused on realizing a mount such to overcome technical troubles.
Pulleys and tooth belts
This revolutionary choice produces a basic benefit: a really steady motion, in particular without plays and sudden peaks, factors of paramount relevance in long shots guiding as well as in high magnification visual observation. Those problems are of particular relevance for the declination motor which can now quickly reverse the motion, without breaking for any plays, that is the reason for the name: FAST REVERSE.
Whortwhile to stress that, since the motion transmission in the gear-worm systems has just one contact point, any error on each of the two will, sooner or later, result into tracking errors. On the contrary, in the pulley-tooth belt system, no direct contact occurs and the motion is transmitted by the belt working with some 50% to 90% of the girth surface. Consequently, any occurring errors are balanced among the cogs, softer with respect to the gears ones, which are in contact as well, so absorbing any effects on the tracking. It should be noted that, since guiding problems arise just from those quick and sudden jerks that no guiding software can face, the ability of the Linear system to minimize the impact on tracking of those troubles does make the difference.
No maintenance, no lubrication
Another noteworthy advantage of the absence of frictions is that no skidding is possible during the GOTO motion.
First, the problem is well known when drawing the worm to the ring gear: a gear-worm coupling even a bit loose introduces plays, but if the coupling is tight the motors may get stuck, so that the system must be pointed again.
Moreover, the absence of any plays makes the initial calibration of guiding CCD fast and easy.
